"Géoguide Grand Paradis"
On Monday the 26th of July the project Géoguide Grand Paradis – Esprit des lieux et nouvelles technologies: le Grand Pardis dans votre portable was presented at a press conference at the Maison Bruil of Introd. Géoguide is a pilot project carried out as part of the French-Italian cross-border cooperation project Les Racines du gout, that allows to discover the Grand Paradiso territory and cultural heritage through customisable geo-referenced itineraries and innovative technologies, such as augmented reality.
At the press conference the Géoguide Grand Paradis features were explained: the Web-GIS Georouter allows to create and download itineraries equipped with maps, descriptions of the interest-points and geo-referenced photographs. The applications of the multimedia Geoguide (Geolives) and of augmented reality (Gran paradise augmented reality) and their sustaining mobile devices were also presented. At the end of the press conference there was a practical demonstration around Maison Bruil on how to use the GPS audio-guides for Smartphones and the augmented reality applications for iPhone.
The GPS audio-guide for smartphones shows the visitor through a Google Earth interactive map; in the proximity of each interest-point of the itinerary, the GPS automatically opens a description tag and a photo and activates the audio-guide. For those who own an iPhone it is possible to admire the view “reading” it through augmented reality: the phone should be pointed in the direction of a mountain, a castle or a village for a description, a photograph and other information to appear on the screen.
Three iPhones and six GPSs are available for the visitors of Maison Bruil of Introd (open until the 12th of September, every day from 11am to 7pm) with no additional expenses. For those who own an iPhone or a GPS it is possible to download the Géoguide itineraries for free from Fondation Grand Paradis’ website. From next week Gran Paradiso’s augmented reality application, which adds augmented reality to the multimedia Geoguide, will be available at iTunes App Store.
The director of Fondation Grand Paradis, Luisa Vuillermoz states: “The aim of the Géoguide project is to increase the value of tourist destinations; it adapts to tourists’ demand by not imposing a pre-established offer, but by concentrating on originality and innovation, on quality and on the non-repetitiveness of the experience. It should be a unique experience that adapts to the visitor’s taste and choices”.
